www.versus.com is hosting it's annual Fantasy cycling team for the 2010 Tour de France and this year I'm in. I struggled immediately with who to pick - I've got my favorite riders and those I don't like but I respect, but the salary cap was prohibitive. After playing for the better part of an hour, some tough decisions had to be made and I didn't know how to make 'em.
Without geeking out on the math, I decided to make a scatter plot to compare the cost per rider and their 2009 stats. I wanted to find the best riders for the money and a negative correlation (low cost, high points) was going to give me the info that I needed.
My graph is shown below.
I used this plot to choose the remaining riders on my team and I'm hoping that my method will get me the grand prize - a trip for 2 to the 2011 Tour de France! Stay tuned for my results.
